What is your company’s most popular perk? We value the Zernco culture created from caring about individuals’ work- and home-life balance and ensuring that opportunities are available for everyone to achieve their personal development goals through education, mentoring, social events and advancement opportunities. Being a part of the Zernco family is our most popular perk.

What would others be surprised to know about your firm? We are a leader in workforce development in central Kansas. Through visits to grammar schools, high schools, tech colleges and degreed programs, we partner encouraging students and educational institutions to offer training in the construction industry. We are the largest woman-owned general contractor in Wichita, employing 60 employees that travel nationally building restaurants, c-stores and other retail space.

What steps does your company take to recruit and retain younger employees? Our most effective recruiting tools are offering internships each summer to college and high school students interested in construction careers. Through the practical experience they receive, mentoring and including them in the Zernco family culture, we have successfully bridged the gap between an internship and becoming a full-time employee with many of our recruits.

When employees talk about your company, what do they brag about? Over and over we hear about the family atmosphere and the genuine caring that comes along with working for a company who knows you and your family by name. Additionally, our employees are proud of the professional work they do, the training and mentoring they receive and the personal growth that is supported through our programs and policies.

What makes your company the best place to work? Our employees. A president who is passionate about her workforce and helping them grow into the best individuals they can be. A collaborative environment that encourages innovation and participation and a culture of continuous improvement. A strong work ethic and belief that profitability will naturally follow when personal values are upheld.
